Experienced and skilled Painters can progress their careers by becoming Supervisors or Managers within a small-to-medium-sized business. They can also specialize in Commercial or Residential Painting and Decorating, Interior or Exterior Design, Wallpapering and Decorative or maintenance work.
The typical job responsibilities of a Painter can include meeting with customers and clients to discuss briefs, advising customers on color selections and finishes, calculating materials needed and projected costs, erecting scaffolding, filling holes and cracks in walls, cleaning surfaces and walls, painting and decorating walls, applying finishes (glazing) to walls, cutting and hanging wallpaper.
If the scaffolding is under five meters, Painters can erect scaffolding without being a registered Scaffolder. However, for scaffolding above five meters, a registered Scaffolder is needed.

Carpenters should be able to identify the requirements of a job by inspecting blueprints, arrange any materials and tools needed to complete the job, determine the best processes to complete the job efficiently, cost-effectively, and in a timely manner, assemble all the pieces of a blueprint, use tools such as hammers, chisels, saws, drills, and sanders to cut and install wood, plastic, aluminium, fiberglass, or drywall, use nails, screws, and other materials such as adhesives to join everything together, use a level and other equipment/instruments to validate their work, and fix, repair, and maintain a variety of structures made from wood.
